Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (PRP) for Heel Pain and Tendonitis

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is used in regenerative medicine – medicine that uses the body’s own blood or tissues in healing. Platelets are a specialized type of blood cells that are involved in injury healing. With PRP, a concentrated platelet solution is injected into the injured area to stimulate healing.

The platelet solution uses plasma from the patient’s own blood. It has been used successfully in treating heel pain and tendonitis.

How is PRP performed?

PRP injections are prepared from one to a few tubes of the patient’s own blood. After being centrifuged, the activated platelets are injected into the affected area, releasing growth factors that recruit and increase cells that can repair the tissue.

Is PRP covered by insurance?

In most cases, PRP is not covered by insurance. If the patient has an employer-sponsored Flexible Payment Medical Savings Account, then the procedure could be covered through that account.

How do I learn more about PRP?

Talk to Dr. Bier about the procedure and whether it is right for you. He will help you decide whether PRP could be a useful therapy for your specific condition.
