Balance Exercises Can Help Prevent Falls

Good balance helps people walk with confidence and avoid falls. Balance depends on the feet, muscles, and nervous system working together. Age, an injury, or reduced foot sensation can interfere with this process. Foot pain and weak ankle muscles can make a person feel less steady. Balance exercises can improve control by teaching the body to respond to changes in position. Patients with recent injuries, severe dizziness, or frequent falls are at risk of falling. Exercises can be prescribed by a podiatrist. They should be performed near a sturdy counter or railing for support, while wearing shoes with soles that grip the floor.

A podiatrist can determine whether a foot or ankle problem is affecting balance. The evaluation includes checking joint movement, muscle strength, and sensation. Care can include customized balance exercises, wearing supportive shoes, or custom orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts made to improve stability and distribute pressure evenly. A podiatrist can explain which exercises are appropriate, and how often to perform them. Movements should remain controlled. Stop if pain, dizziness, or unusual weakness develops. Follow-up visits can track progress and allow the exercise plan to be adjusted safely.

Several exercises can improve balance without special equipment. For a one-leg stand, hold a stable surface, lift one foot, and keep the standing knee relaxed. Hold briefly, lower the foot, and repeat on the other side. A heel-to-toe walk involves placing one foot directly in front of the other while looking ahead. Sideways walking can improve coordination. Take slow steps to one side, bring the feet together, and then reverse direction. A low step-up can strengthen the legs and ankles. Use a railing, place one foot on the step, and rise slowly before stepping down. If you have injured your foot or ankle from falling,  it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Preferred Footcare, LLC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
